The Kin

Biography

The Kin—led by Australia-born brothers, songwriters, and multi-instrumentalists Isaac and Thorry Koren—are a New York City-based pop-rock band that has built a large and authentic following over the last three years touring across America, Canada, Australia, and the UK. They have opened for acts including Rod Stewart, Blue October, Joshua Radin and Rusted Root.

The Kin’s sound is a layered experience, combining raw passion, soulful expression, poetic lyricism, top-flight musicianship, and the brothers’ signature vocal harmonies. Billboard Magazine has said, “The Australian siblings have a radiant gift for songwriting and performing.”

The group’s most recent album of original songs, THE UPside (2009), was recorded in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle with legendary GRAMMY-winning producer Jack Douglas (John Lennon, Aerosmith, The Who). The Kin’s next album, The Rondo Sessions, Volume 1—featuring an inspired assortment of covers—is set for release in early 2011. The project, backed by Berkeley-based production house and independent label Ninth Street Opus, is a collaboration with San Francisco based trip-hop/alt-rock producer team The Rondo Brothers.

The Rondo Sessions came about after Isaac and Thorry explored their road manager’s extensive music collection, acquired over his many years as head buyer for Tower Records’ Greenwich Village store. The Kin fell in love with the classic soul of Bill Withers, the sizzle of Nina Simone, the beat of the Kinks, and the storytelling of David Bowie—all among the artists represented on the album, selected from sessions that generated more than 45 tracks. Featuring “true to the song arrangements,” the recordings spotlight a modern approach, danceable beats, and edgy vocals. The Kin is developing a live show for their fall 2010 tour to introduce the songs.

Previously, in addition to THE UPside, The Kin released the 2007 album Rise and Fall, produced by Nic Hard (The Bravery). YRB Magazine wrote, “Isaac and Thorry Koren engage the listener immediately, drawing them into their moody yet compelling world…it’s both darkly optimistic and noticeably beautiful.”

The Kin’s songs have been featured on television series including Warren the Ape, Real World, Army Wives, and The Hills. Fan recognition for the track “Together” from Moonlight led to it being used in a Superbowl XLIII commercial, and music from The Kin has been licensed for three motion pictures. On radio, the group’s repertoire is heard on Triple-A and commercial stations nationwide, as well as on XM Satellite Radio, syndicated programming including Premiere and Westwood One, and Voice of America’s internationally broadcast show “Border Crossings.” They have also appeared on morning and magazine TV shows across the country.

In addition to entertaining audiences, The Kin use their music to raise money for causes including the Save Darfur Coalition, the Madison Square Boys and Girls Club, and, most recently, FM World Charities, a not-for-profit “rock & roll” charity dedicated to fostering primary health care initiatives throughout the world.

The Kin are currently writing songs for a new studio album, forthcoming in 2011.
