Poland's Warsaw Village Band, with its invigorating rhythms and haunting vocals combined with the szuka (knee-violin), cello, dulcimer, hurdy-gurdy, nyckelharpa, frame drums and baraban drum, is one of the hottest new groups in the world music scene. Redefining Polish village music with intensity and high energy, the band showcases the raw sound they refer to as “radical roots style” and "roots music from the ancient to the future." The program features selections from Infinity, its acclaimed new CD on Barbes.
Since 1997, the members of the Warsaw Village Band, conservators and innovators of Polish music, have traveled the Polish countryside making field recording of folk festivities and village celebrations, studying old manuscripts, and learning from elderly rural musicians. In addition to ancient Polish folk instruments and the powerful “white voice” singing style originally used by Tatra mountain shepherds to communicate over long distances, they use contemporary elements, including modern instruments and topical lyrics. They describe their folk music as an alternative to mass culture and a “source of fun, joy, and spontaneity.” Their fourth and latest recording, Infinity, features cutting-edge compositions and incorporates influences as varied as traditional village music, Swedish Polska, African polyrhythms, and Jewish music. The group has received the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award and the Fryderyk Award (Polish equivalent of the Grammy), and traveled to over 30 countries on four continents, performing over 400 concerts.
This program is supported in part by the Stoleczna Estrada - Cultural Institution of the Capital City of Warsaw. The program is supported, in part, by public funds provided by the New York State Council for the Arts, a State agency, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council. Additional funding is provided by the Trust for Mutual Understanding. Warsaw Village Band
